Overview

Within the department of respiratory medicine and infectious diseases, we treat the whole spectrum of bronchial and pulmonary diseases.

To safeguard the perfect performance of this task, our department - as well as the department witin the Augusta-Kranken-Anstalt (AKA - Augusta hospital in Bochum) - offer the following diagnostic and therapeutic capacities (see also clinic equipment):

Pulmonary function testing
(measurement of lung volumes and capacities, airway resistance, respiratory mechanics and gas exchange, six minutes walking test)

Cardiological examination
electrocardiogram (ECG), 24 hour ECG, 24 hour blood pressure monitoring, excercise testing

Cardiopulmonary excercise testing
Spiroergometry (determination of the cardiopulmonary capacity)

Radiographical imaging
(chest radiography, computed tomography (16-slice) including high resolution imaging (HRCT), lung scintigraphy)
In addition, further up-to-date imaging procedures are provided by the » Institut für Radiologie, Nuklearmedizin und Radioonkologie (Institute for radiology, nuclear medicine and radio oncology) such as for example: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), conventional X-ray diagnostics, digital fluoroscopic unit, angiography and interventions (Digital Subtraction Angiography - DSA).

Bronchoscopy
(flexible video bronchoscopy (OLYMPUS EXERA-II-system), if applicable together with fluoroscopy, puncture scope (Olympus) and endobrachial ultrasound (EBUS), autofluorescence bronchoscopy, rigid bronchoscopy in anaesthesia, bronchial recanalisation techniques (laser therapy (Neodym-YAG, Argon), kryotherapy, stent implantation)

Pleural punction and biopsy
(analysis of pleural effusion liquid, biopsy with a RAMEL needle)

Thoracoscopy
(Endoscopy of the thoracic cavity, pleurodesis under visual control)

Pleural drainage
(In case of pleural effusions or for the treatment of the pneumothorax that cannot be aspirated immediately)

Sonography (ultrasound)
Ultrasound of the thoracic wall and the wall-near pulmonary tracts, endobronchial ultrasound, ultrasound of the abdomen and the vessels, echocardiography (= ultrasound of the heart)

Sleep laboratory and ventilation techniques
Pulse oximetry, capnography, screening examinations (Polygraph), polysomnography (ALICE V, 3 places), non-invasive home ventilation (nCPAP, BiPAP)

Allergology
Dermal Prick testing, determination of IgE as well as specific IgEs regarding different allergens, determination of Aspergillus-specific antigens (Asp 1-6)

Infectious diseases (in co-operation with Professor Doctor S. Gatermann of the Ruhruniversity of Bochum)
