Patient's information
The department of respiratory medicine and infectious diseases includes 40 beds within the Augusta-Kranken-Anstalt (Augusta hospital in Bochum). More than 1200 patients have been cared for during the accounting year 2007.The ten most frequently treated cases in our department in 2007 were:
- chronic-obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
(irreversible airflow limitation due to chronic bronchitis and/or lung emphysema)
- neoplasm of the chest
(bronchial, pulmonary, pleural or mediastinal tumours)
- infections and inflammations of lower respiratory airways or
the lung
(acute or chronic bronchitis, pneumonia)
- bronchial asthma
(inflammation or restriction of the respiratory tracts)
- interstitial pulmonary disease
(pulmonary tissue diseases e.g. pneumoconiosis)
- other operational procedures at respiratory organs
(other operational interventions at the respiratory organs)
- diseases of respiratory regulation
(respiration difficulties)
- cardiac failure and shock
(heart failure or circulatory shock)
- tuberculosis
(lung consumption)
- sleep apnoea syndrome
(extended respiratory pauses while sleeping, resulting in fatigue or impairment of performance)
